The United States of America has indicated that it has no favorite presidential candidate for Nigeria’s upcoming 2023 elections.
Will Stevens, the United States Consul General, stated his country’s views on Saturday during a town hall meeting organized by the Niger-Delta Open Observatory (NOGO) in Asaba, Delta State.
While reaffirming that the US government would not favor one candidate or party over another, the person cautioned that politicians who engage in political violence will be denied visas.
He reiterated that America’s only interest in the 2023 election is ensuring that Nigeria holds free, fair, and credible elections.
“The United States does not favor any particular candidate.” No political party or individual candidate has our vote.”What we want are elections that are free, fair, and trustworthy, and that represent the people,” Stevens added.
“These elections are critical. Nigeria is the world’s fifth largest democracy, therefore when Nigerians vote, they demonstrate the strength of democracy to the rest of the world.
“We shall work to deter any politicians, individuals, or groups in the United States who advocate for electoral violence or seek to disrupt the political process.”
According to Nigerian News The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set Saturday, February 25, 2023 as the date for Nigeria’s presidential election.
